Hearer or Doer? 6 Signs You’re Listening to God’s Word but Not Living It

We’re living in times where it’s not enough to simply know the Word — we must live it.

It’s easy to listen to a powerful sermon, take notes, or highlight a verse and think, “That was good!” but then walk away unchanged. The truth is, inspiration without transformation doesn’t produce growth. Real change happens when we not only hear God’s Word but do it.

And before you feel discouraged — this isn’t about perfection or legalism.

It’s about maturity. It’s about moving from information to transformation.

Today, we’re going to talk about six signs you might be a hearer only and how to become a doer, too — so you can mature in Christ and experience the beautiful, lasting fruit of living life God’s way.

Did you catch that though? Being both a hearer and a doer of the Word is the call!

Six signs you might be a hearer only:

1. Talking the Talk but Not Walking the Walk

We’ve all been there — quick to quote scripture, but slow to apply it when life gets messy. James reminds us to be “slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

When our words don’t align with our actions, our faith loses its witness.

God isn’t after eloquent speech — He’s after surrendered hearts. Walking the walk means living what you believe, even when no one is watching.

That’s how we GROW — through consistent obedience in the small things.

2. Saying One Thing but Doing the Opposite

God’s Word is clear: “Don’t just listen to the Word — do what it says.”

When we hear truth but don’t live it out, we deceive ourselves. And yet, God doesn’t shame us for this — He lovingly calls us higher.

Obedience isn’t about striving to earn favor; it’s about responding to the love we’ve already received. Every act of obedience, no matter how small, deepens your roots in Christ and helps you GROW stronger in faith.

3. Hearing the Same Truth Repeatedly but Never Retaining It

If you keep hearing the same verse or message and it feels brand new every time, that’s often a sign you’re hearing but not applying.

God, in His mercy, repeats Himself because He wants to help us mature.

He’s patient — but He also desires progress. Let’s not be like the person who looks in a mirror, walks away, and forgets what they look like.

Reflection and application are what turn knowledge into spiritual GROWth.

4. Needing to Be Taught the Same Thing Over and Over Again

Reminders are good — Scripture even tells us to “keep ourselves in remembrance.” But if we find ourselves circling the same lesson again and again, it’s worth pausing to ask why.

Is it a lack of understanding? A need for surrender? Or perhaps resistance to obedience?

God isn’t trying to embarrass us — He’s inviting us to breakthrough.

When we start practicing what we’ve learned, the Word takes root. Doing helps us remember, and remembering helps us GROW.

5. Having the Same Conversations Year After Year

If your words still center around the same hurt, disappointment, or frustration from years past, it’s time to release the past.

God’s Word urges us to “forget what is behind and press toward the mark.”

GROWth means forward motion — not dwelling on what was, but stepping into what can be.

Stop rehearsing pain. Start rehearsing promises.

Your healing begins when your confession aligns with truth.

6. Facing the Same Problems Over and Over

If you keep battling the same patterns — the same doubts, frustrations, or sins — it’s time to apply the Word like medicine.

The Word works when we work it. Every step of obedience breaks the cycle of stagnation.

Don’t just hear what God says — live it. That’s how you GROW into the woman God designed you to be: steadfast, wise, and full of peace.

Why This Matters

Being a doer of the Word isn’t about striving or performance — it’s about becoming more like Christ.

When you live out what you learn, your faith matures, your peace deepens, and your confidence in God’s promises strengthens.

The storms of life will still come — but when your roots are grounded in obedience, you’ll stand firm. You’ll walk through trials with peace and come out stronger on the other side.

That’s the reward of obedience: not just knowing truth, but becoming shaped by it.

Reflection Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • In what areas of my life am I hearing God’s Word but not applying it?

  • What step of obedience is God asking me to take today?

  • How can I invite the Holy Spirit to help me live out the Word more intentionally?

  • What scripture can I meditate on this week to strengthen my faith?

  • What does spiritual GROWth look like for me in this season?

Let’s GROW Together!

Beloved, Spiritual GROWth takes humility, surrender, and consistency.

None of us get it right every time — but the beauty of walking with God is that He keeps meeting us where we are, leading us forward one step at a time.

We’re not called to be perfect; we’re called to be faithful.

Let’s keep pressing forward, walking by faith, and putting the Word into practice daily.

Because when you live it — not just hear it — you’ll GROW into the woman God has called you to be.

Let’s GROW — for the glory of God! 🌿
